I’ll do it tomorrow. Someday I will make it away from here and go explore the world.
For most people tomorrow never comes. Years later you’re still sitting at that desk, wondering where the time went and when your life started to go wrong.
No one wants that to happen to them, but how many people reading this haven’t known the sting of tomorrow and someday? Not many, don’t let regret, fear or those Chirpys get the better of you. I can admit that I am one of them myself. Falling into the someday track is very easy to do. But you don’t have to let the past control your actions now.
Start planning
This is the first step that you have to take to start travelling today.
You may not have the money or the time for another couple of months to a year but the second you start planning, everything becomes real and likely to happen. Your brain is a very powerful thing and the second you recite something back to it as fact, it starts to figure out how to make it true because the brain doesn’t like to lie.
Go down to the travel agent, get some pamphlets, look up a destination you would love to go to and find out what you can do there.
Go somewhere different today
Travel is essentially about going to new places and experiencing new things. For the moment you can’t get to the far-flung place you really want to but you don’t have to.
Go a different way to work, stop off at a different store on the way home, or go to a park. Find somewhere different. This will seem like visiting somewhere new, even if it’s only five minutes down the road.
It will remind you why you want to get away and all the fun you can have exploring new places. As humans we are very much driven by routine and changing it even slightly can seem like travelling if only for a couple of seconds.
Talk to someone different
For me there is nothing more routine than talking to the same people every day, it can often feel like you are repeating the same day over and over and over.
So talk to that bus driver you usually ignore, that person you don’t like at work. Talking to that person you don’t like is a excellent motivator as the longer you talk to them, the more you realise that you really don’t like them and the faster you will get away.
If you really do it well, that person should think that they have found a new friend in you and start to talk to you every day. That should keep you motivated.
Tell your boss you’re going on vacation
It will seem real and then you really have to go. It will keep you responsible and accountable, because really, how embarrassing would it be to show up for work when you’re supposed to be on vacation.
Read some travel blogs
There a lot of good ones out there and it may not be helping you travel today, it can make you feel so jealous that you will start saving for that trip in an instant. Nomadic Matt and the Matador Network are a good place to start.
Buy something different for lunch
You’re in a foreign country, you have no such thing as brand name food here, all you have is that strange vendor food and some very strange other brand name food. So strange that you have to wonder what they were thinking when they decided to make them. (Honestly Peanut Butter Cups?).
So find somewhere different to eat, you may absolutely hate whatever it is you have just put in your mouth, but it has now hopefully got you thinking about what other strange stuff you can sample overseas.
Rent a few travel movies
You may not be travel past your own couch but it’s a start and it will make you want to go all that urgently. Airplane! Or Flying High as it is sometimes called is a good way to get you travelling, just don’t watch it before getting on a plane. There are too many good travel movies out there to name so just go and pick one.
Get on a plane
This article is for people who don’t have currently have the time or money to get on a plane as soon s they finish reading. But if you are one of those people, and how I wish I were you, just go to the airport and get on a plane somewhere – who cares where, and just have fun.
There are a lot more ways to start travelling today, if you can think of any not mentioned here, please let your fellow escapees know and leave an escapee plan (comment).
