Some days nothing goes right. Writing feels like a chore, travelling not what you thought it would be like. Sometimes you’re just sick of everything.
You’re lonely, you’re on the road, and if you have to sleep in a dodgy little room with no privacy one more time, you’re going to scream.
Its times like this is when that old job, your old life and being completely and utterly boring, with your real job in the real world seems like the best thing in the world.
These are some of the most dangerous times in your life. When carrying around a mood like this, you can do a lot of stupid things, in a quick fix effort to make yourself feel better.
Things like going back to that job, giving up your dream and settling for a nice job and house in the suburbs, firmly entrenched in the real world. You could give up your escapee plans because everything seems too hard.
I know. I have done it too many times to count. I am currently writing this because I am having one of those days. Everything seems like a struggle and like nothing will ever get better.
Just stop. Stop.
Sometimes no matter what you do, you will have a completely bad day, the thing is though that you can’t let it go and turn into a completely bad couple of days, weeks, months or year.
Too easily it spirals out of control and everything unravels and suddenly you are sitting on the side of the road wondering exactly how you got here.
Look, you can’t be super happy and cheerful all the time. Let yourself have that bad day.
Spend half an hour just whining. If you have someone to vent to great, if not, just whine in the privacy of your own head. Let that Chirpy grow on your shoulder for a little bit, then kill it when it least suspects it.
But remember this, when that half an hour is over, find something else to do, distract yourself. Don’t let yourself whine for more than half an hour, otherwise that isn’t whining, that’s letting the Chirpy on your shoulder grow.
Think about everyone back home.
Think about how they are stuck in jobs that they hate, too set in the real world to change, while you are out there and living your dream. Or think about how at least you are making changes in your life to get out, if you haven’t quite escaped yet.
Think about how you haven’t been dragged down to their level and how you have changed your own life and the fact that you’re not stuck in a life you don’t want.
If those thought don’t help you move back on track, just find someone to talk to. It’s the best way to distract yourself.
Go out buy an ice-cream and talk to the people on duty there. Listen to their problems or gossip, usually after about ten minutes it’s enough to lift your spirits a bit.
Finally, remember that it’s incredibly easy to give up, that’s why so many people have real jobs in the real world and do you really want to be like them?
